Tutoring

Student tutors are the first contact of new students in Turku University of Applied Sciences. They will advise where you can go to eat, and where you can find toilets, timetables and public health care for students. You can get information about our University and it’s learning environment, policies, etc.  Although the official student tutors post lasts only one year, the students will remember their own tutor after years as a person who helped them to adapt to school.

Student tutors are bound by confidentiality, which makes them trustworthy people. They are people that are united by a common desire to help new students in school. The word” Tutor” means to us following things: trust, control, support and having fun doing things together.

Tutors plan and execute the program of the first study year together with the staff of TUAS. The student union of TUAS – TUO organizes tutor trainings and events for tutors.

Who can act as tutors?

Student tutors are either second or third year students who are interested in helping other students. They attend tutor training before starting in their new post. New tutors are recruited each year, this year during Nov. 29th – Dec. 10th. Follow ads in your own campus so you won’t miss the recruit! Get further information about student tutoring and instructors to apply from your own Study Counsellor.

Student Union – TUO’s main task in tutoring is to organize tutor trainings and events for tutors. Trainings are planned together with Study Counsellors and each year we try to bring something new to the programme. TUO also aims to enhance tutoring in TUAS and works at national level with Union of Students in Finnish Universities of Applied Sciences - SAMOK ry. Once a month is also arranged a responsible tutor’s meeting, where we look through current issues, and plan new directions for tutoring.

This year, TUO concentrates in tutoring to enhance the existing forms of activity. That means better training sessions, more fun in tutoring and better work methods for tutors.  It’s important for us in TUO that all tutors would feel a sense of solidarity and togetherness, i.e all tutors form a united group within TUAS. Tutors provide peer support for first year students, but why not also their own colleagues?

Tutor’s mascots are Super Man Tutor and Super Woman Tutor. If you want to be become such a super figure who wants to be involved in cooperative activities, events organizing and helping new students, contact your tutors or Study Counsellor.
